What If Ressha Sentai ToQGer Became Super Sentai's 40th Anniversary Season

I did some Akibaranger rewatching and I ended up coming up with a wild idea. So why didn't Toei set ToQGer as the 40th anniversary season instead of Zyuohger? The reason behind it is that ToQGer is powered by IMAGINATION which reminds me of Akibaranger's Delusion Power. All this may be possible if Naruhisa Arakawa were its main writer.

All that Imagination Power in ToQGer could have been used more or less the same way as Akibaranger. In fact, I even think about improving that concept What if a bunch of children who became adults through their IMAGINATION ended up imagining Super Sentai Warriors in suit. Just imagine it if in the introductory arc we see Right imagine himself into meeting Red Hawk or the other Akibarangers discover the power of the previous Super Sentai. The opening scene could have them as children imagining they are Super Sentai warriors. Then newer train mecha would be based on past Super Sentai powers which they imagine these stuff into life as they battle the Shadow Line.

This would probably have some comedic reaction with the Gokaigers and the Ninningers. I remembered Ninninger had a few special guests namely Tsubasa Ozu/Magi Yellow, Sasuke/Ninja Red, Yousuke Shiina/Hurricane Red and Yamaji Touha/Jiraya from the Jiraya Metal Hero series. The crossover would probably be funny if the ToQGers could end up imagining the Kakurangers' powers and the Hurricangers' powers to the envy of the Ninningers. If it were a Gokaiger/ToQGer crossover it could also be that funny. I mean, what if they ended up strengthening their imagination so far that the whole Gokaiger continuity bumped into theirs? That's what I'd call your imagination got so strong you brought in one whole show!

Shadow Line could end up this way. I would like to imagine what if a group of hammy horror comedy villains were bent on deleting the history of Super Sentai from the minds of children? Another possible thing they do is to take over Imagination Worlds related to Tokusatsu and the ToQGers must free these various Imagination Stations from Shadow Line's corrupt influence. We could get children who get caught in these corrupted stations with different half-brained plans to trap the world's Imagination the shadows forever. Of course, Emperor Zetto can still exist as a Loose Cannon and Large Ham provided he doesn't deviate from Shadow Line's objective. Then put General Schwartz as the Scott Evil of the group who plans to overthrow Emperor Zetto for making nothing more than Dr. Evil type plans to carry out Shadow Line's schemes.

What do you think of this what if scenario?

Kyuranger 34: The Mysterious Wrester Is...?

This episode presents the mysterious Masked Wrestler. I find this to be a not-so-good episode made up with some badass CGI and action scenes. Let's get started shall we? Once again, thanks to Nihon Hero for providing some of my pictures for weekly Kyuranger reviews. But again, if you want updates on Kyuranger toys just read Ukiyaseed, Nihon Hero and JEFusion for more information.

Kukuruga returns with a monster version of Champ. As the fight happens, a mysterious masked wrestler appears. Why does he have the power of a Kyuranger? Did the time shift happen so badly? I find everyone confused yet some things are too predictable at times. Then again, some things are not so predictable either!

Stinger believes that this masked wrestler is actually Champ. But this masked wrestler is in denial one way or another. We see a bit more of Champ's and Dr. Anton's past.

So it's proven that Dr. Anton is a scientist for Jark Matter. Why Scorpio killed him is still unknown. It's possible that Dr. Anton is a defector from Jark Matter so he was killed or Scorpio had personal agendas. I hope later episodes can develop this plot even further.

Predictable or not... the mysterious wrestler is REALLY Champ. I saw it coming. I just thought Champ's identity changed as a result of the time shift. Right now, he has the problem of going berserk and I hope the Kyurangers will find a way to fix it.

Previously, Kukuruga has been absorbing single attacks. The solution was to overload the absorption device. I was hoping they would attack at different directions. At this point, Kukuruga gets destroyed by the Kyurangers.

For the first time, we see all four mecha in battle against Kukuruga and the fake Champ.

They also unleash this new technique using the combined lasers. This creates a giant cannon which reminds me of the Vavilos from Shaider. Speaking of which, didn't the Dekarangers do this once with the Dekawing Robo? It's a lot of good memories from so many years back.

So we learn where Don Armage is though I suspect this is another trap. It's possible that Don Armage has prepared a trap for them. Next week's episode will look pretty intense as there may be more than meets the eye in dealing with the Universe' biggest tyrant.

Next week, Hammy auditions to be an idol. Also, Don Armage will engage them in personal combat yet again. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I hope Don Armage doesn't get wasted by executive meddling or bad writing because she's one badass f***ing evil villain!

Revisiting Ressha Sentai ToQGer's Railroad Of Imagination

Today is in commemoration of the day that Ressha Sentai ToQGer got its well-deserved award because of the Railroad Day which is held on October 15. It got its award on October 14, 2014 a day before the said day that year. I thought about how TV ratings may no longer be the most reliable gauge of popularity in the digital age considering the rise of Internet TV. Now I'd like to think about the charm of ToQGer and how it's still an important show.

First, let's talk about the document given to ToQGer:

Ressha Sentai ToQger, is one of the Super Sentai series that has aired on TV Asahi for nearly 40 years. This Sentai has been produced using a train motif! The award presented is aimed to familiarize and promote the railroad system to a wide ranger of people. We believe that the show is an excellent source of encouragement in the upbringing of future railroad fans.

Yes, trains are a very important part of Japan. Celebrating Railroad Day should be maintained even after ToQGer is over. ToQGer does that in giving children the message of the important of trains in daily life. Maintaining the Japanese railway system and keeping it safe should be taught. There's the opportunity for parents to teach their children about the safety of the train lines. Sometimes, you just need to have a creative way to teach youngsters how important something is. ToQGer did just that aside from Carranger (road traffic), GoGoFive (the unity of family and safety rules) and Go-onger (taking care of the environment).

I know I've complained about the plain designs and the more simple looking mecha. The simplicity is genius in some ways. The train designs were probably meant to be simplistic to fit with the theme of childhood nostalgia. The ToQGers have no memories and it fits with the twist that they're actually children in the bodies of adults. They have to face the pains of growing up and getting back to all their missing years. It's probably done to appeal to the inner child. There's always some fun having some moments of nostalgia even in this day and age. You can talk how technology advances all the time while old school entertainment lives. Talk about having the latest video game console all the while old school titles of the past get  re-released and remastered. There's a charm to simplicity at times and ToQGer does just that. It may be all about appealing to one's inner child while watching the show.

At the same time, it may also be teaching children about growing up. The ToQGers still fight on to defeat the Shadow Line even after they discover they're but children in the bodies of adults. They want to return to the natural course of life and grow up normally. In order to do so they must face through various trials in their childhood. It may also show children not only to fear growing up but also not to be in a hurry to grow up. Nobody should be in a hurry to grow up as it could lead to consequences. The ToQGers realize that they must fight for their normal childhood so they can grow up normally like every other person.

Thank you ToQGer for keeping Japan's Railroad Day alive!

Kyuranger 33: Come Forward New Battleship And Robot

Last week's episode bridged a plot similar to Kamen Rider Black RX's episode with the Orion. We all saw the previous battleship destroyed and now it's time for a new battleship. The timeline has changed for better or for worse.

Eris way back from Space 19 and Space 23 returns for this episode. She reveals that history has changed with Shou Ronpou continuing the legend in the past. This also reveals an underground passage.

The latest monster is Twister who can twist personalities. He twists the personalities of Hammy, Balance and Spada to have different personalities. Lucky was later able to use reverse psychology to snap them back into action.

We see it in the underground passage yet they still have no means to activate this new battleship. What's surprising is not is...

Shou Ronpou returns through freeze compress in the past. Things change for better or for worse. We still have the same happy-go-lucky commander we know from the past.  He returns but the Kyurangers still haven't found the new Orion Kyuglobe.

It's interesting to see Lucky interact with his ancestor one last time before the actor receives his flowers. We see the power of Orion's club in the past is used in the present to unleash the new battleship which doubles as a robot.

I thought that Orion Battler would be a humongous mecha like Dekabase Robo but my expectations are wrong. I could also raise another issue with Super Sentai logic. Many times, we've seen mecha transform without crushing the heroes or villains inside it. We've seen mecha split into two yet we don't see the pilot fall out of it. I guess we can't have Super Sentai without logically impossible moments can we? What's even funnier is the Kyu Globe location. So why did Orion in the past even think of putting the cockpit on the shoulder?!

We see that Champ got captured which will create the plot of the next episode.

Next week would be Champ's return but who is the other mysterious robot? I can't wait to find out.

What If Junki Takegami Were Ressha Sentai ToQGer's Head Writer

I once thought that Naruhisa Arakawa should've been Ressha Sentai ToQGer's head writer because of Akibaranger. Another writer worth mentioning is none other than Junki Takegami. So why would I mention him as an alternative? If you did some Super Sentai research for the late 90s up to late last decade it'd be obvious. On the other hand, for the sake of others who don't know why I could talk about it why I imagine him as its head writer. He was involved with not just one but two shows that were obviously public service announcements. In the year 1999 he was assigned to be Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive's headwriter. In 2008 he was assigned as Engine Sentai Go-onger's headwriter. He's also the head writer of Denji Sentai Megaranger which might also help though I'd stick to the fact he's involved with GoGoFive and Go-onger for this post.

GoGoFive, Go-onger and ToQGer may all be different themes but they have one thing in common: they promote safety rules and they're public service announcements. GoGoFive had a lot of safety rules taught through the show's episodes. Go-onger taught about the importance of taking care of the environment. He would have built more knowledge for safety rules in contrast to Yasuko Kobayashi. Kobayashi only served as GoGoFive's secondary writer and wasn't even involved with Go-onger. But Takegami has had more experience than Kobayashi in writing a lot of safety rules related episodes. That alone would really make him more than qualified to handle a series that promotes the importance of the railway system in Japan IMO.

Instead of Braneworlds, maybe Takegami would have created the concept of Imagination Worlds that the ToQGers would save. If you think about it the Shadow Line aim to make our world suitable for their living conditions. That's just similar to Gaiarc wanting to pollute Human World so they could migrate to it. I could imagine that he would actually create the plot where the ToQGers seek to save certain Imagination Worlds from the influence of the Shadow Line. He may even write public service announcements about train safety tips and OTHER safety tips at the end of every episode. There's many possibilities on how he would have handled a series that deserved its award last October 14, 2017. It's so sad really that he didn't get the opportunity to handle it even as a secondary writer!

Pretty much, I think he would have been another fine choice as the series' head writer.

Lunar Bases In Super Sentai And Kamen Rider

Since it's #MoonFestival2017 I decided to write about moon bases that were used by both heroes and villains. Here goes nothing and here's as far as I can remember so I may have missed a lot. =P

The Bandora Palace

Bandora herself decided to have her palace located at the moon since it's just a barren wasteland. I guess her stay in Planet Nemesis with her followers may have also affected her mindset. This was originally built on Earth during Bandora's initial attack.

The Baranoia Palace

It was built on the moon some time ago though it became active in the year 1999 in Ohranger's continuity. The machines were exiled away from Earth to the moon millions of years ago. Baranoia built its base on the moon where it hopes to organize its invasion forces. Later, the Baranoia moved to Earth after their near victory before the final battle. What happened to it is unknown.

INET Moon Base

This didn't always appear in Megaranger until episode 32. From episodes 1 to 31, everyone used the Galaxy Mega in its spaceship form. It was later badly damaged by a mutated Gurail. This became the new base of operations of the Megarangers where the Mega Voyager was stored. Later, Dr. Hinelar would destroy this base in the final battle.

Rabbit Hatch

Kamen Rider Fourze provided the technology to teleport from school to the moon. It was established by Kengo Utahoshi's father before the show started. The Kamen Rider Club would have their meetings in this place. The class adviser Ohsugi-sensei discovered this place but kept it a secret. The Horoscopes would later destroy this place in the finale arc.

Why I Don't Provide Magazine Scans And Toy Catalogs In this Blog

I've been doing weekly episode reviews. At first, I was afraid to do episode reviews because other bloggers were "covering it up" until I realized that I can do it my own style. There's one thing that I don't want to do and that is provide magazine scans for upcoming Super Sentai gimmicks. IMO, doing episode reviews would be my way of doing updates.

This is the latest Kyuranger magazine scan from JEFusion. While I could go ahead and give my first impressions but I don't think it's enough. I could go ahead and say that "Oh that looks cool!" or "I bet it'd be great." but I don't think it's enough. IMO, I really want to see all these clips in actions in any upcoming episode of Kyuranger.

I could have done some writing based on a magazine scan about Orion Battler and what I think. For me, it doesn't really do much justice until I see all the power-ups or latest mecha in action. Toy catalogs are toy catalogs. I'm not here to give news on Kyuranger but rather my reaction to the latest episodes and how the new gimmicks will work out.

From what I think the blogs like UkiyaSeed, JEFusion and Nihon Hero just to name a few provide those catalogs. I may choose to write about this year's Super Sentai but I want to focus more on the episodes. Doing episode reviews has been more exciting than just taking clips and assuming how they work. Instead, I'd rather see all the gimmicks in action before I even write about them. It's always better to see something in action before talking about it.

Kyuranger 32: Rebellion Of Scrap

Okay... sorry for the misleading thumbnail!

This week's episode focuses on Jark Matter's latest plan to blow up the Earth simultaneously. This time, we're going to have the machines of Earth activate on their own by some strange organism. The same plan would reactivate all deactivated Consumarz and force them to explode together.

Is it me or is Keisuke Minami getting cast as Tsurugi Ootori meant to show there's still a generation gap? He shows he's not too old to play Kyulette Chance but he temporarily assumes the role of commander. This also gives us to this one...

Yup, we have a bit of a joke number which I thought was somewhat forced. I guess writers wanted to let Minami express his inner child with the new generation of Super Sentai cast members. But I think Tsurugi still has a lot to catch up since it's already 2317 in the Kyuranger continuity.

Kukuruga and Dogyun show up. I can't blame Don Armage for getting angry. Akyanba's plan to use Naga ended in failure. The Vice Shoguns somehow remember their defeat 300 years ago and are still having scars from it. Dogyun shows his latest ability.

Dogyun makes the appliances of the Earth rebel all the while reactivating all deactived Consumarz. This is a plan to blow up the whole Earth with the Kyurangers. I think that the plan could have been more effective if Raptor and Lucky didn't end up finding a way to defeat those blob-like organisms.

The episode shows a relationship between Raptor and the Orion. I always thought that maybe, Orion is a sentient being. There's a bit of conflict especially Tsurugi feels that the Orion's time is up. On the other hand, Lucky chooses to believe that Raptor isn't deluding herself.

The Orion reactivates and sacrifices itself but not without teleporting its inhabitants away. This saves the Earth from total destruction. Meanwhile...

Shou Ronpou sees the construction of the new Battle Orion Ship. I guess time is about to shift again. I guess Shou Ronpou and all those who stayed behind 300 years ago are coming back.

Next week, we'll see the new mecha in action. I'll only write about Battle Orion Ship only when I've seen it in action. They go to Constellation Crux which may hint we're going out of the dystopian Earth again for another planet.
