Kyuranger 16: Am I My Brother Stinger's Keeper?

This week's Kyuranger is a deviation from the fun time we had last week. No matter how lighthearted most post-Timeranger Super Sentai are but we do get some serious moments. Even the comedic Carranger and Go-onger has their share of serious moments. This episode of Kyuranger starts to make me like Scorpio as my current favorite villain of the series.

Scorpio shows how much of an actor he is. So he does pretend to want to destroy Jark Matter to save the Universe but he has other agendas. He stings Madako and we know that she can feign it. Scorpio plays with Stinger's feelings creating a well-thought trap. I don't think I'll miss Ikagen now that Scorpio is doing such a magnificent job in the conflict.

What's predictable (or not) is that he dramatized everything. Stinging Madoka was all but a part of his plan to fool his younger brother. He has plans to overthrow his master Don Armage. I wonder how will this play into the series. I think Don Armage may have a back-up plan or two. I hope that this will be a season-long conflict. He plans to rule over the Universe himself. He tries to dissuade his brother into his side. Shades of Darth Vader anyone?

What makes him so despicable is that he could actually dare to kill his own brother. Families get torn apart when they belong to different allegiances. In the case of Scorpio his allegiance is to himself. He seeks to assassinate Don Armage (hopefully we'll see him beyond the hologram ASAP). Champ ends up taking the attack for Stinger.

I felt bad for Stinger here. He thought he could still save his older brother. But now, they're torn apart. To make matters worse, Scorpio doesn't look like he's brainwashed and crazy. Instead, Scorpio may be evil at his own free will. Champ will be sent to Rebellion HQ for repairs. I doubt it Scorpio can be redeemed compared to Burai in Zyuranger.

Next week will involve in an invisible enemy. Looks like we're going to get some cool Bandai merchandise by next week.

My Thoughts On Geki Jumonji/Second Gavan And Banban Akaza/Deka Red's Upcoming Appearance In Kyuranger Episode 18

From the Tokusatsu News Network here's the synopsis of the upcoming Kyuranger episode which will air on June 11, 2017:

Madakko has stolen the Pyxis Kyutama and arrived at a different part of space through a blackhole. The Kyurangers follow but they are encountered by Geki and Ban who, unaware of the situation, arrest the heroes on illegal space travel charges. We will see the encounter of commanders Sho Ronpo and Doggy Krueger as well as the latter’s encounter with Garu, his inter-series brother (?). The episode will also feature team-ups by Lucky/ShishiRed and Ban as well as Naga/HebitsukaiSilver. Ishigaki will show his own skills in scenes before transforming.

What do I think of the upcoming crossover? I'm actually excited to see what's going to link itself to the upcoming Gavan vs. Dekaranger film. I still like Dekaranger that much and I still can't forget how I watched Gavan as a child. I still can't forget how I enjoy Dekaranger's police-based theme and how it wasn't your typical Super Sentai. Kyuranger is space-themed. Gavan is the first of the three Space Sheriff series and maybe it's the most popular one of all. Dekaranger integrated elements from various Metal Hero series into a Super Sentai show. I guess it's only fair enough to get them though I wish Hikari Kurosaki who played Juspion would guest-star. Too bad that's not happening.

As for the plot, I think it's probably going to be a huge series of what-ifs yet again. So I wonder how the Dekaranger couldn't even get rid of the whole Space Shogunate or where was the Galactic Police when Don Armage was establishing his galactic empire? I hope the show decides to give an explanation for that. Also, the possibility that Garu could be Doggy's brother may be giving non-canon siblings. Toei's had that habit. Remember how Chuzubo had a brother known as Chubozo in Hurricanger vs. Gaoranger or how Frieza had a what-if only brother in the Dragon Ball Z movie-only continuity Revenge of Cooler and Cooler Returns? It wouldn't make sense though if Garu is Doggy's brother. Garu is a wolf and Doggy is a dog. What's the world of fiction without creating different possible continuities?

Isn't it funny how Kyuranger's current main antagonist is called Don Armage? Gavan's main antagonist was called Don Horror. I wonder if the show will explain how the Earth got taken over by Jark Matter assuming that Kyuranger exists in the VS. Universe. EX-AID's appearance may already proof that Kyuranger may not be a standalone series but takes place in the Super Hero Taisen universe. I hope the show will give him a real background story to what kind of person he is. Will he be established as a relative of Don Horror from Gavan? Will we see a San Dorva type character to appear in Kyuranger soon?

Image result for tsuaka marvelous
Also, will longtime fans of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider see both Captain Marvelous and Tsukasa Kaido in a future episode of Kyuranger? I hope to see not just Captain Marvelous but also Tsukasa in a future episode. I may not be a fan of Kamen Rider Decade and the first Super Hero Taisen movie (both had problems with implementation) but it would be nice to see both shows take part in the war to take back the Universe.

Was Flashman Originally Going To Be Called Gingaman?

If there's the Power Rangers snob rumor mill then there should be the Super Sentai snob rumor mill. Then again they're not the only rumor mills in the Tokusatsu community. There's the possibility that somebody right now who likes both Super Sentai and Power Rangers prefers Lost Galaxy over Gingaman. There was the now disproven rumor that Lost Galaxy is more popular than Gingaman in Japan. There might  be the rumor that Flashman was supposed to be named Gingaman. There's really no proof and maybe this is really far from believable. With Kyuranger being space-themed and a possible Gingaman DVD release is coming soon I decided to write this speculative entry.

The plot of Flashman was where five children were kidnapped by Alien Hunters. The spaceship crashed and the five babies grew up in another solar system or some distant "lost galaxy". They were trained on Planet Flash and its four satellites. That alone could have probably given it a better justification to name the series as Gingaman. They use space technology not from our galaxy but from some "lost galaxy". I guess we're all going to get the word "Flash" replaced with "Ginga". We may get Flash King as Ginga-oh or Flash Titan as Ginga Titan. They're children who grew up in some lost galaxy and must now try to connect to their birth planet Earth.

While I do like Gingaman but I thought the series could have been named Seijuuman instead. Seijuu means Starbeast and that's what the series was based on. Lost Galaxy could have been better named as Galaxy Beasts. I think the name Gingaman could have been better off applied to Flashman. So why was Gingaman well named... Gingaman even when it's a treehugger? The mind really boggles and I think that maybe Flashman is probably the first true Ginga series before Kyuranger came into the scenes.

What do you think of this speculation?

My Thoughts On Naruhisa Arakawa Writing Two Episodes For Ucchu Sentai Kyuranger

I just read from UkiyaSeed that episodes 17 and 18 of Kyuranger will be written by Naruhisa Arakawa.  Both episodes are to be aired on June 4 and June 11.

As much as I suggested that Arakawa should've been ToQGer's head writer but I also asked myself whether or not he's already heading towards the road to burnout. A lot of my favorite writers have hit burnout every now and then. What I could mention that writers who wrote blockbusters for Toei eventually undid themselves during their decline period. These writers I love to mention are Hirohisa Soda, Toshiki Inoue and Yasuko Kobayashi. I wonder how will he fare with writing two episodes. Will they still be great or will they end up showing that he's overworked?

So what's with Arakawa? I thought about how he wrote one episode in Kamen Rider Black where Bilgenia tried to crush Kotaro's faith in humanity. I like his Jetman episodes except for the Dryer Jigen one. His Dairanger episodes aren't exactly what I wanted for Dairanger. He wrote some fan favorites such as Kamen Rider Kuuga, Abaranger, Dekaranger, Gokaiger and Akibaranger. That's going to be a lot and he also was a major contributor from 2001-2011. He's going to write Gavan vs. Dekaranger which makes me wonder whether or not he's still in top shape.

How will they turn out? I'm pretty nervous and I should start setting a low bar by now. I didn't find Dekaranger: Ten Years After to be a good return movie. I'm already getting skeptical with how Gavan vs. Dekaranger will turn out. He probably needs less of a load now (or even a reasonably short break) with his job as a head writer. I'm afraid he's already burning out.

Kyuranger Space 15: It's Fun Time At The Beach Planet Vera... Or Not?!

This week's Kyuranger is too early for summer in Japan. Maybe, there's some environmental drive going on and this is what Kyuranger's next episode is. It's all about saving the oceans. One of Jark Matter's invaded colonies is the ocean planet of Vera. They're after the Vera Kyu Globe which may open up some mysteries of the Universe soon enough.

The Kyurangers hope to take a swim only to get their hopes dashed. I guess the Jark Matter could care less about environmental concerns as long as they get profit. I'd like to tell their officers to try counting their money without breathing. But I wish that this scene were shot in Coron, Palawan to at least remind everyone that environment and economy should be done together.

The whole ocean planet is polluted no thanks to the invasion of the Jark Matter.  The new Daikan known as Goneshi is fooling everyone. He gets some offerings which are the fish of the planet. I guess this guy has never heard of conservative fishing.

We get to see some human-like inhabitants in Vera. IMO, I wish they made them look like fish aliens or something for this episode. Anyway, the natives in Vera think that the Kyurangers are behind the problem. This causes some trouble. Naga comes up with a crazy plan which doesn't work so well.

We get to see more of what Hammy was in the past. It's time we see more of Hammy. Hammy relates herself to a Veran girl named Martha. Martha is unable to tell everyone of the truth behind the "savior" of the planet. Hammy helps Martha open up which exposes the deception of Jark Matter. What I still find funny is how they were able to clean up the ocean that fast. =P

It's interesting to have the still surviving Madoka now take sides with Scorpio. The mission on Earth isn't over yet. Scorpio realizes that Darth Sidious ahem Don Armage is somewhat in a hurry. What in the world is Don Armage hiding from the audience?

Next week, I can't wait to see how the confrontation between Stinger and his older brother Scorpio will turn out. I hope this conflict will be well-written and enjoyable.

My Forced Comparison Of Kagaku Sentai Dynaman With Michael Bay

Michael Bay would probably love Dynaman. There's some things that Dynaman and Bay's films would have in common. Here's my forced comparison just for the fun of doing it.

The overuse of explosions

Dynaman's overuse of explosions is really something for an 80s Super Sentai. It almost felt like that Bay directed it. I think it's only fitting for the show to have an overuse of explosions because of the "dyna". It's a dynamite-filled Super Sentai series.

The tendency to use fanservice and attractive females

Okay short shorts and short skirts aren't really new to Super Sentai. You already had that in Goranger. But it seems Dynaman has some fanservice with not just Rei Tachibana but also with Princess Chimera. Episode 20 featured a bikini battle between Rei and Chimera. Episode 29 features a sexy scene with Chimera bathing and her armor getting stolen. Should I mention Zenobia is also pretty attractive?

For the love of awkward designs

If Bay didn't use CGI then we might see robots that look really clunky. I like Dynaman as a series but I think the mecha is that ugly for me. If Bay used suit actors to do the cast of his Transformers series then I think they'd really look like 80s Super Sentai mecha.

The Jashinka may also carry some of Bay's stereotypes

They're a typical gangster in how they do things even if they're royalty. They're also one sided patriots. You've got the crazy person in Megiddo and Chimera... and later Zenobia. Megiddo is also trigger happy in several episodes. Should I mention the military stereotypes are also present as both Zenobia and Karr are both generals?

Go-Busters Should Have Been A Doomsday Super Sentai

Power Rangers RPM's rather unique plot had potential in its setting as a doomsday season. I don't even feel like comparing my preference of Go-onger over RPM because it's pretty much apples and oranges. If anything, I could end up saying that I have good reasons to choose Go-Busters over RPM because of the similarities. I remember how excited I was to think how Power Rangers RPM's concept could have been used in Super Sentai but I feel like it wasn't all that good either. But again, I wonder why Judd Lynn is a fan of this series?! I wish that Go-Busters were a doomsday Super Sentai but it turned out not to be it. Considering it's the 5th anniversary of Go-Busters so I feel like writing this entry.

What I wish happened was that the December 24 incident would have caused something catastrophic. The Messiah virus was born on that date and years later, it would leak infecting the whole world. If RPM had the dome city of Corinth, then Super Sentai could have the dome city of Tokyo or maybe Akihabara. It could be better if a lot of humanity went underground with the Messiah virus controlling the world as we know it.

This results to the organization of the underground colony by Takeshi Kuroki. He doesn't have to be Hiromu's father. He could just be Japan's own version of Colonel Truman from RPM. Both commanders always get their job done. It's a shame that 32 episodes can't give Colonel Truman more room to show off how good he is as a mentor. I think he could be involved in humanity's last struggle against the Messiah virus. He organizes the Go-Busters unit for the same reason that the RPM team got established. Just remember it's not spandex!

I'd actually try to give the Messiah virus a better plot than just Miho Nakamura releasing a virus so she could move out form captivity. I guess I would have it where she tried to suppress the virus years ago but underestimated the power of the anti-virus. I could probably have it where the Messiah virus was released by some mad scientist creating an epidemic similar to Amazons. Miho herself can still play the role of Dr. K and she tries to find a way to destroy the virus permanently.

I thought Escape shouldn't have been turned into a fully synthetic version of Tenaya-7. I think it could have worked better if she were actually somebody's younger sister turned into one of Messiah's experimental subjects. She's brainwashed into calling Messiah as "papa". Unlike Tenaya-7 who met her happy ending I'd actually want another failed rescue mission. Sure we have Shiima in Changeman and Jannu in Abaranger meeting their happy ending but Maria in Jetman didn't. Just think what if she became a tragic version of Tenaya-7. I could probably make her Jin Masato's sister or maybe even Ryuji Iwasaki's younger sister. This could lead to a lot of conflict.

I could still keep Enter the same sadistic person that he is. The Messiah card arc could actually be where he figures out how he could take over or not. I would probably allow him to see the Messiah virus defeated, he temporarily takes over and yet in the finale his betrayal isn't forgiven. I would have a moment where he thinks he's achieved what he already wants but the last remnant of the Messiah virus suddenly takes over his system. No, I wouldn't drop a building on the Messiah Virus in Enter's body. Instead, I'd give it a grand all duke out with an anti-virus to forever delete him or is it? Maybe we could have a hanging ending similar to RPM's where it's hinted that the Messiah virus may not be forever deleted.

I also thought who would have been the best writers? I'd pick Yasuko Kobayashi and Toshiki Inoue. But again, what if Toei will meddle with them again. Then again we already know Inoue already burnt out during Kamen Rider Kiva and Kobayashi was already losing enetron during Go-Busters.

Ten Ways Super Sentai Tells To Screw Logic, Sit Down And Enjoy The Show

Super Sentai has been enjoyed for several years by different generations of fans. I thought about a number of stuff to how Super Sentai tells you to screw logic, sit down and just enjoy the show because it's plain fiction. Here we go:

Teenagers or even children get mixed into the team at times

Super Sentai has some instances teenagers do get involved. If we had teams of teenagers with attitude with Turboranger and Megaranger then we had some instances a teenager got mixed into a team of adults. We have child rangers with Kou from Dairanger, Riki from Turboranger and lately Kotaro from Kyuranger. We have teenagers mixed into a team of adults like Akira from Maskman, Ako from Jetman, Tsurihime from Kakuranger, Kai and Sae from Gaoranger, Chiaki and Kotoha from Shinkenger, and Fuuka Igasaki from Ninninger. Should I mention that the ToQGers are but children trapped in the bodies of adults?

Giant robot monster battles happen a lot yet the Japan isn't destroyed

So how do we have giant robot battles almost every week and Japan still stands? So why aren't people getting flattened every time there's a giant robot battle? What about getting stuck in traffic? It's a good thing that GoGoFive and Dekaranger does try to add more sense when they organize evacuation procedures. Most of the time, you can just assume that the Super Sentai team have the cooperation of Japanese authorities to get people ready in case there's a giant monster attacking the city. You know how disaster responsive Japan is so it's not too much of a problem.

You need a complete team to defeat just one monster almost all the time

I always find it funny how the monster of the week has the strength of five people or how you need a complete team to defeat one monster. It does look unfair at first but those monsters are a lot stronger than usual. I couldn't forget instances like how the Bioman team was weakened when Mika died or how the Jetmen needed to be complete to save the day. I guess this is meant to address the lesson that there's strength in unity. In real life, just think that you sometimes need a team of policemen just to apprehend one criminal.

Super Sentai teams usually don't bother to deal with the monster-enlarging agent whenever one is present or find a way to prevent giant monster battles

This one always bugs me. In Jetman, why don't they find a way to stop the Dimensional or later Bio Dimensional beasts' hosts from auto-enlarging? In Turboranger, why don't they stop the enemy general from enlarging the fallen Bouma monster? There are also monster-enlarging agents so why didn't the Changeman finish Gyodai off, the Maskmen finish Okerampa off or the Livemen finish Guardnoid Gash off? Well screw logic. We certainly want to sell more mecha toys don't we? So if the heroes decided to destroy the monster-enlarging agent or prevent the monsters from enlarging then what's the use of selling more toys?

Military and police tends to be useless at times unless they're the ones that own the Super Sentai team of the year

Some Super Sentai series are military or police themed like Goranger, JAKQ, Battle Fever J, Sun Vulcan, Changeman, Jetman, Ohranger, Timeranger, Dekaranger, Go-Busters and the recent Kyuranger. If the Super Sentai isn't military themed or police themed then the military and police are useless against the invading force unless if they possess technology greater than what the Japanese defense force offers in real life. The military and police are still useful in their regular jobs in non-military themed Super Sentai seasons but they are almost useless against Tokusatsu villains. It reminds me of the finale arc of Kamen Rider Black RX where the military tried to stop Gransaurus with ordinary machine guns never mind that they couldn't even stop Gorgom in Kamen Rider Black with the same weapons.

One stupid plan fails then it's time to think of yet another stupid plan for world domination

This is really one thing that explains why the bad guys lose most of the time. It's almost like they're having Dr. Evil as their evil consultant with how to take over the world. If the first stupid evil plan fails then they move to another evil plan that's sure to fail again one way or another. These evil plans cause harm but you can't deny how these villains just don't make getting rid of the Super Sentai warriors their first priority. What's good for the heroes and bad for the villains is that Scott Evil villains are a hard find in Super Sentai. I even gave a thought to why the villains never come up with something like killing the rangers while they're in the toilet or in the shower. I guess it's the fact most of them are so stupid that keeps the show running.

The continuity approach in some seasons can be very inconsistent

Super Sentai tends to have issues with how to deal with continuity. It's understood that most Super Sentai seasons are meant to be standalone series. But some Super Sentai seasons tend to act like as if everything is in a single timeline instead of using a Tokusatsu multiverse. VS. Movies tend to take place outside the series continuity in the form of a movie. But what's happening is that crossovers are now happening within series proper. Shinkenger had glimpses of Kamen Rider Decade within its series continuity. Gokaiger fits all 34 Super Sentai series and they became guest stars in the crossover with Zyuohger. Ninninger had a couple of guest stars in-series such as Sasuke/Ninja Red, Yousuke Shina/Hurricane Red and even the Metal Hero Jiraiya. But many times it's already hinted that most Super Sentai seasons as well as most Kamen Rider seasons tend to be standalone seasons.

In Gokaiger and some other non-standalone Super Sentai series, it seems like past teams just don't bother to help at all

While Super Sentai has an explanation to why in a lot of previous seasons because Super Sentai seasons tend to be standalone but one could wonder why in some cases. JAKQ vs. Goranger was a good example. One could ask why didn't the Gorangers help JAKQ until later? In Gokaiger, the Legend War was fought so in Gokaiger's continuity why didn't the past teams help before Gokaiger came? Some teams that still have their powers aren't helping. I guess most of the rangers have returned to their civilian lives and won't bother helping unless absolutely necessary.

Sixth rangers have become more and more mainstream ever since Burai came

Sixth rangers were getting experimented upon during the 80s. Bioman had the Magne Warrior and Maskman has X-1 Mask as sixth ranger prototypes. It seems that ever since Burai from Zyuranger became so popular more and more sixth rangers got into demand. I think some fans felt like Burai was the reason why Zyuranger didn't crash so hard. Only a few seasons ever don't feature a sixth ranger like GoGoFive (because of the name), Kakuranger (Ninjaman was an extra hero) and Carranger (same goes for Signalman). Most of the time sixth rangers are now mainstream. As much as some of my top favorites from some shows are the sixth rangers (ex. Burai, Eiji Takaoka) but I tend to prefer rangers from the main team. It's all about toys right?

So why are we still making role calls when the final battle for the day happens?

This one really makes me laugh. So why are we always having the repeated role call? I guess this is theatrics or something. When it's time to conclude the fight it's time to do a role call before the fight happens. So what's the point in making the role call? It's just so funny but I guess it's a colorful way of reminding villains that we're still going to kick your ass no matter what. But I guess no Super Sentai is ever complete without these role calls huh?

_______

With this in mind, just sit back, relax and enjoy Super Sentai while you learn some important life lessons. These ten factors keep the show going so you can at least have some fun. Just remember that Super Sentai may have some really weird stuff going on but it's definitely way better than watching those idiotic teleseryes.

Kyuranger 14: Urashima Taro In Space

It's time for a wacky episode. The episode was written by Kento Shimoyama and I'm personally more impressed with him now. I can't forget how Ninninger can be boring but some people don't succeed the first time. My feeling towards Shimoyama is like how I feel towards the Super Hero Taisen series. First movie was really a disaster but succeeding movies manage to fix what's broken. Let's get down to business shall we?

Garu feels he's so unlucky. I guess it's only normal that your fellow teammate can feel down. I enjoyed how it comes to full circle. It's Garu who snapped Lucky out of his pessimism. Now it's Lucky's turn to return the favor.

The plan is to invade Space Ryugu Castle. This isn't the first time Urashima Taro got featured in Super Sentai. Do you remember the 17th episode in Bioman where Monster and Juuoh were tasked to find the descendant of Urashima Taro? There was also the 18th episode in Gavan when Hunter Killer planned to get the treasure of Ryugu Castle. As far as I've heard Blue SWAT's 26th episode featured Urashima Taro but I haven't seen it. Winspector made a reference to Urashima Taro in episode 33 but not to Ryugu Castle. Did I miss any more Toku series by Toei where Ryugu was mentioned?

Sidenote: The story of Urashima Taro, that is the underwater palace where the main character spent time with the princess. The ending is pretty sad since Urashima Taro realize that time froze around him and everything he knew was gone. The ending also made a reference to the box that would make you grow old. In some versions of the tale, the main hero dies as no human could live up to 400 years.

The plan is to rescue people who are arrested for using luxury. So what's it really with Imperial Daikan Yuterujan arrested them and decided to put all luxury in Space Ryugu Castle. I don't know what the ship is for. I guess residents of the Galactic Empire ahem Space Shogunate spend their time there during their leaves. I just have a hunch that Darth Sidious ahem Don Armage may not be so happy to see Space Ryugu Castle destroyed.

The episode is also full of cartoony humor. Garu's obvious disguise as a lady fools Yuterujan. The Kyurangers' obvious disguise fools everyone. Come on, they already all look too obvious to be the Kyurangers. I guess we really can't do without typical cartoon humor these days. On the other hand, I wished that Hammy played a bigger role than rescuing civilians. She could have killed Yuterujan after taking advantage of his weakness but I guess they wanted something funnier.

Next week, we're going to the Planet Vera. We've been stuck in Earth for too long. I'm wondering will most of the events still be on post-invasion Earth or will we get more planets? What if we might stay in Planet Vera where the sea is polluted. Hammy takes the spotlight for next week. Zyuohger and Gaoranger taught children about respect for nature and wildlife. Go-onger taught children how to care for the environment for an entire season. Hirohisa Soda wrote a lot about misused science and care for the environment (and can't forget that episode in Turboranger where Peropero Bouma created nightmarish trash zombies). I guess Kyuranger is going to do the same for next week's episode.

Five Reasons Why I Prefer Dekaranger Over Power Rangers SPD

Some people prefer Power Rangers SPD over Dekaranger for personal reasons. It can't be denied that Power Rangers SPD got dubbed in Japan by the Dekaranger cast. Maybe some think that SPD is a one-shot wonder by Bruce Kalish. Allow me to share my personal opinion on why I prefer Dekaranger over SPD. After writing about why I prefer Abaranger over Dino Thunder I decided to write this post.

Better main cast of characters

SPD has good acting but the use of Hannah Montana acting on Syd (I'm glad Miley Cyrus didn't land on that part!) is something. What I don't like about SPD is the main cast. Some of these characters are like Jack (and I prefer the hothead idiot Ban over him), Sky (especially with how he tends to think too highly of himself early on) and Syd doesn't even look like she could last there. I thought that SPD could have worked it out like if Sky were less arrogant (while him admitting his own arrogance in some flashbacks before he became part of B-Squad) or if Syd's ditzy behavior were on flashbacks rather than something in the present scenario. I would take the Ban/Hoji rivalry any day over the Jack/Sky rivalry. My favorite example is how Hoji isn't acting high and mighty even if he tend to berate Ban's recklessness.

Better plot pacing

One of my constant nitpicks against Power Rangers is the pacing. I think rush-pacing is a huge problem for Power Rangers. The 32-40 episode format can ruin any potential. I think the 38-episode format of SPD rushed everyone's development like Sky's transformation from a stuck-up guy to a more easy-going guy was too fast compared to how Hoji became more accepting of Ban.

A little bit more police-style writing

Power Rangers SPD had its recurring villain Emperor Grumm (and later revealed the true leader of Troobian, Omni) in the similar format of Hell Saturn's status in Sun Vulcan who was ruled over by a disembodied brain who calls itself the Omnipotent God of Black Magma (which wasn't omnipotent at all). I thought Dekaranger kept the police spirit a bit more by not having a central organization. Agent Abrella exists more as an overarching villain while other episodes have nothing to do with him. It was nice to have a not-so-typical Super Sentai every now and then.

I find the humor in Dekaranger better

This is pretty much subjective. I guess it's all because I think Super Sentai humor is better than Power Rangers humor. I thought the humor in SPD just doesn't appeal to me. I think it's more of a cultural thing than anything else. I prefer the humor between Ban and Hoji over Jack and Sky. Maybe it's because Ban's humor is based on his die-hard desire to get justice prevail than slacking off or that Hoji has a closer relationship with almost everyone.

Better unmorphed action scenes

SPD still gets the job done in the unmorphed fight scenes department no questions asked but I still think Dekaranger did it better. Maybe one good example is where I like how Hoji dared to fight a steroid-powered alien named Jilvan with his bare hands. That scene may not be all that great but it certainly proved Hoji to be a badass kicker. SPD still gets the job done but I think the whole TV-Y7-FV standard tends to force the action scenes to be toned down.
